Ship Pets & Critter Capturing - A Complete Owner's Manual
A thorough overview and introduction of your default Ship Pets and Critters you can capture in the wild.
Introduction
The $1,000,000 pre-order stretch goal finally makes its way into the game with the Spirited Giraffe update.
These are ship pets, companions you get to know through circumstance rather than choice. These pets just happened to be in the ship you fled with. In the case of humans, that could be the last cat in the universe! Given the destruction of earth.
Ship Pets are confined to your ship and are unable to leave it by any means, instead providing a warm sense of companionship each time you beam back up as opposed to a beast you'd bring into battle.
The developers have opted to go with no customization when it comes to your pet's appearance, and instead wanting them to be something you become attached to. While this may be their stance early on, they've also commented you may be able to influence their appearance over time in the future. As of the release of this feature, there are currently seven pets available - one tied to each playable race.
The Pets
As mentioned previously, a total of seven pets - one bound to each race. There are currently no official methods to obtain another race's pet other than from spawning in a different racial ship via admin commands and overwriting your current one or using the Steam Workshop.

Color Variants
Ship pets are generated at character creation and are unique to racial ship types. The color of these pets is determined when the game begins and can not be changed. If you would like a different color/pattern for their ship pet you may need to start a few new characters until they get the appearance they desire as there is currently no way to alter their appearance after beginning a game.

Behavior
Pets currently have hidden stats for hunger, tiredness, playfulness and curiosity. Assuming they're fed they'll behave differently based on the current state of those stats.
______________________________________________________________________________
Curiosity affects if your pet will follow you around or examine nearby objects and decide if it likes them. This stat is also affected by hunger.
Playfulness affects whether or not your pet wants to play with any of its toys.
Sleepiness affects your pet seeking out the Pet House item. If it can't find one it will usually opt for the nearest nook or cranny.
Hunger affects your pet's current mood. At low levels it will be perpetually grumpy. You can feed your pet by simply dropping food onto the ground or using the Food Bowl item.
Very hungry pets will eat food they don't like whilst a pet that isn't hungry at all will eat food it loves regardless of hunger level. Hungry pets will also look for the food bowl item and consume food within it. Experiment with a variety of things find out your pet's favorite food item.
They'll also happen interact with any pets you bring onto your ship via capture pod.

F.A.Q.
A section I'll update over time as questions are asked and more content is added. Please ignore for now.
____________________________________________________________________________
Q: Can I delete my ship pet?
A: No. It is currently not possible by vanilla means to not have a ship pet on board your ship.
____________________________________________________________________________
Q: I want another race's ship pet instead of my current one.
A: It is currently not possible to swap them out by any means. Your ship pet will always remain on board your ship. However, it is possible to add other pets through admin commands. Ship pets are linked to Tech Stations and can be manually spawned in to spawn its corresponding pet.
- /spawnitem apextechstation - Weasel
- /spawnitem aviantechstation - Bunny
- /spawnitem florantechstation - Snake
- /spawnitem glitchtechstation - Piglet
- /spawnitem humantechstation - Cat
- /spawnitem hylotltechstation - Crasberry
- /spawnitem novakidtechstation - Snugget
These tech stations are very fragile and destroying them will cause the pet to disappear completely. Use caution when building or dismantling anything around them.
____________________________________________________________________________
Q: I don't like the color of my ship pet. Is it possible to recolor it?
A: No. Your ship pet's color is randomized when you create your character. The only way to get a desired color is to keep rerolling at game start until you're satisfied.
____________________________________________________________________________
Q: How do I bring my ship pet to visit someone else's ship?
A: It is not possible to take your ship pet off of your ship.
____________________________________________________________________________
Q: How do I see my ship pet's statistics?
A: The four hidden statistics are only viewable when in debug mode. To access and view it like the above image you must enter /admin followed by /debug into the chat log. Enter the commands again to exit the modes.

That's it for now, but I'm sure there are more features to come for these pets. Look forward to this guide being updated frequently as more is added and discovered. I love creating and documenting these kinds of things so I hope at least a few of you got some use out of this guide. Definitely plan on making more of them for different games I enjoy, so feel free to subscribe if that might interest you for whatever reason.
Thank you for using my guide.
